Today's question is: Traditions, what are some of your favorite family traditions? What are some that you want to begin?
Honestly, we do not have any traditions yet, as this is our first year as a married couple.
Growing up, my family would always attend the Christmas Eve Service at our church. We have not found a church here yet, but I would like to find a Methodist church who does a Christmas Eve service to attend this year. Last year we went to my husbands church and took communion, but there was no actual service.
I am hoping that this can be the beginning of every other year we spend the holidays at our house, instead of driving all the way home. This will both mine and my husbands first year away from our family during the holidays. They have been invited to come here if they want too, but we are not going home. With the shaky economy and my husband not having PTO at his job yet, we just really did not think we could afford to take the time off to get back home. I think it will be a lot more relaxing to stay here as well.
I am also going to start the Christmas cookie tradition with my son this year. Growing up my Mom had a TON of Christmas cookie cutters. Every year she would make dozens upon dozens of Christmas sugar cookies and let me decorate them. She would buy white icing and all kinds of doo dads to go on them and then let me make my own colored frosting with food coloring. WE had some interesting cookies! Purple santa's, turquoise reindeers, you never knew what you would get. Then we would make plates of them and give to our neighbors, freinds and teachers. As I got older I continued to give my teachers and friends cookies. To this day one of my friends Dad's will start harassing me as soon as Thanksgiving is done, about when he is going to get his goodies.
That is about all I can think of the start this year. I guess we will have to experiment over the next few years and see what works for us. Or maybe I will get some ideas from reading all the blog posts in this contest!
Mmmmm Christmas cookies! How fun!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful first Christmas together and create beautiful traditions, cant' wait to hear about it! Here's My Day 2! I have Mr. Linky up, so leave your link!
ReplyDeleteAwww, making Christmas cookies. That is one of my favorite memories as a kid with my mom.
ReplyDeleteWe love to do cut out sugar cookies too! Purple santas....lol
ReplyDeleteWe do sugar cookies too!!! Love that tradition!
ReplyDeleteWe aren't Methodist, but we have a Christmas Eve service at church, if you'd like to attend. I can get you more info if you want.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we can have Daniel and Hoss decorate cookies together. I tried last year with Hoss and let's just say I'm not the best baker. :)
We love to make cookies to pass out to friends and family too. Everyone looks forward to it each year. My son's creativity just adds to the fun.
ReplyDeleteHow excited that you get to start making your own traditions together. Enjoy your first Christmas as a married couple.
ReplyDeleteWe also have funny cookies at Christmas time. The kids like to pull out all the cutters--not just the Christmas ones, so we have Easter bunny, Shamrocks, Pippi Longstocking, etc. to go along with Santa, Christmas trees and snowmen!
ReplyDeleteWe love making Christmas cookies too.
ReplyDeletelove your picture!! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteI hope you two have a wonderful first Christmas together!
That comic is FUNNY!! Good luck to you and your first Christmas at "home".
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool! You have a blank slate! Just remember: don't start anything you don't want to continue for the next 20 or so years! I made homemade cinnamon rolls once, years ago, and GOD FORBID if Hubs doesn't get them on Christmas morning every year now!
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas Eve service at my church was always so special. A candlelight service is always held at midnight. It is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGood luck starting some traditions, I'm not sure what we're going to do
ReplyDeleteThe cookie tradition sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteI tried to start a cookie tradition 2 years ago...slaved away for an entire day. Yeah...let's just say, not the brightest idea I had =P
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I love your description of the cookies. We had some wacky colors of cookies too. It's just not Christmas at our house without cookies!
ReplyDeleteI laughed so hard when I saw the xmas catoon :)
ReplyDeleteMY daughter and I always baked a bunch differnet cookies and fudge. I always let her put the tree up since she was about 9. I would hang the outside lights. She loves xmas music and about first of Nov she would start playing it . I am hoping she gets to come home right after xmas this year .
